METU PROF. DR. MUSTAFA N. PARLAR EDUCATION AND RESEARCH FOUNDATION’S REGULATION ON AWARDS
This Regulation sets out the requirements for awards granted by METU Prof. Dr. Mustafa N. Parlar Education and Research Foundation for Honor, Science, Service, Research and Technology Encouragement as well as METU Education and Thesis.
Awards for Honor / Science / Service / Research Encouragement
General
Article 1: METU Prof.Dr. Mustafa N. PARLAR Education and Research Foundation grants awards each year which is listed below in order to evaluate the studies, practices and services of outstanding scientists and pragmatists in all the fields of science, to certify their competence, strengthen their studies and encourage the new generations which are;
- Honor Award
- Science Award
- Service Award
- Research Encouragement Award
- Technology Encouragement award
- Other awards deemed appropriate by the Board of Trustees
Definitions
Article 2: HONOR AWARD: This award is the superlative award granted to those who substantially satisfies the required terms for science and service which is only granted to persons who are alive.
Article 3: SCIENCE AWARD: This award is granted to those who significantly contributed to science in international level with his/her studies and researches or have provided an important benefits to the country by his/her scientific findings. It is only granted to persons who are alive.
Article 4: SERVICE AWARD: This is granted to those who at least contributed to one of the followings and qualifications.
- a) provide significant contribution for the country’s social, technological and economic development in one of the science fields;
- b) provide significant contribution for enhancing the research potential of the country by research methods and other studies to allow a researcher sense is provided to youth;
- c) Show effort in delivering the research results to industry and industrial development based on research or generalization of such studies
- d) contribute to the country’s development with efforts to establish, develop sectors which is needed for Turkey or bring the existing ones to a fruitful condition,
- e) contribute significantly by pioneering efforts to establish and develop the universities in a modern and enterprising manner.
Article 5: RESEARCH ENCOURAGEMENT AWARD: It is a reward granted to young researchers (those younger than 40 of age in that year) who have contributed to develop one of the fields of science or have supported to resolve an issue of the country in such area. This award may be granted for a specific research study as well as to a researcher or group of researchers by considering all their studies.
Article 6: TECHNOLOGY ENCOURAGEMENT AWARD: This award is granted to young researchers/developers (those younger than 40 years of age in the current year) who have contributed to develop a specific industrial branch with the aim to develop technology. This award may be granted for a specific research/development study, or it may be granted in consideration of all the studies of a researcher/developer or a research/development group (in this case, the age limit is not respected).
Article 7 : It may not be applied for the same award more than three times.
Article 8: The following persons or entities may recommend nomination for the awards mentioned above:
- a) Higher education institutions and representatives of other research institutions and their authorized bodies and professional organizations,
- b) METU Prof.Dr. Mustafa N. PARLAR Education and Research Foundation members of Board of Trustees,
- c) Those who previously received Honor, Science and Service award from METU Prof. Dr. Mustafa N. Parlar Education and Research Foundation,
- d) Those who personally want to be a candidate for Research and Technology Encouragement award.
Article 9: Foundation Award Jury identifies the candidates whom are recommended according to the rules specified herein. Awarding jury may conduct the evaluation itself to make a decision or may assign other specialists and committees for this decision. The awarding jury is selected by Board of Trustees. It is formed by nine members where six of them is selected among higher education institutions and other three members from other institutions. Two third of jury members are replaced every two years. Any member’s membership is automatically cancelled in case he/she fails to attend the meetings successively 3 times without a reason. Vacant memberships due to absence or resignation are replaced by conducting a similar election and the new member completes the term of office of the previous member.
Article 10: Decisions of Awarding jury concerning the awards are declared each year before the end of November.
Article 11: The awards are presented to the winners each year in 19th December by a ceremony. In case such a date is not convenient due to specific reasons, the ceremony date is decided by the Awarding Jury. Winners are presented a plague with the award certification. Those who win Honor, Science and Service award make a statement concerning their field of competency or another issue they prefer.
Article 12: METU Prof.Dr. Mustafa N. PARLAR Education and Research Foundation Awarding Jury members may not be nominated as a candidate for these awards during their term of office.
Article 13: Award certificates and documents not received within one year shall remain with the foundation.
METU EDUCATION AND THESIS AWARDS
General Provisions
Article 1: Each year thesis awards are granted by METU Prof.Dr. Mustafa N. PARLAR Education and Research Foundation in order to evaluate the Middle East Technical University lecturers’ educational and research achievements and encourage the young lecturers which are listed below:
- METU Lecturer of the Year Award
- METU Excellence in Teaching Award
- METU Thesis of the Year Award
Definitions
Article 2: METU LECTURER OF THE YEAR AWARD: As a result of the course evaluation survey administered by the Middle East Technical University Rectorate, this award is granted to such lecturer selected among the most successful lecturers by the students. In the election, two separate averages (last semester and cumulative) obtained by evaluating the answers given to the questions of the said survey about the lecturers are taken into consideration.
Article 3: METU EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING AWARD: It is granted to those who are entitled to be awarded for third time instead of the Year’s lecturer. Those who received this award may not be nominated for the Year’s Lecturer.
Article 4 : METU THESIS OF THE YEAR AWARD: İt is granted to thesis studies which are approved by the Awarding jury after being recommended by the specialists which are selected from among successful postgraduate thesis (notably those thesis concerning technology development) and which are completed within the previous calendar year in various departments of the Middle East Technical University
Implementation Procedures:
Article 5: In identifying METU Lecturer of the Year award candidates, the results of course evaluation questionnaire conducted by students is considered by METU Rector. Among those candidates who satisfy the minimum requirements specified by the Foundation management such as whether he/she is serving full time, total course number within an academic year, number of students evaluated questionnaire forms etc. are considered and the recommended candidates are notified by METU rector to Foundation management.
Article 6: METU Thesis of the Year award candidates are recommended to Institution Managements by thesis jury Committee presidents, thesis managers or the candidate him/herself. The recommendation file includes a justified letter which describes why the thesis is nominated; a copy of the thesis and if any, a list of scientific publications relating to the study. Nominated thesis are examined in detail by competent juries which are assigned by Institute Managements in ODTU rector’s coordination and those which are deemed appropriate is notified to the Foundation management. METU Thesis of the Year award is presented to the thesis author as well as the relevant advisor.
Article 7: METU Prof.Dr. Mustafa N. PARLAR Education and Research Foundation awarding jury members may not be nominated as a candidate for these awards during their term of office
